Avoid The Dark
We recently released Avoid the Dark, which was my third game for Construct Arcade. In this game you are on a desperate mission to survive in your customizable spaceship. Your primary goal in this endless runner is to collect fuel, to keep the system running and prevent the ship from crashing against the ruins of a fallen city.
The setting is a dark twist to my first game EarthDefender where you have to intersect asteroids from a collision course with earth. After the inevitable game over in EarthDefender, many cities are destroyed and burned to ashes. In this post-apocalyptic setting Avoid the Dark takes place.
The game was first prototyped in A-Frame and later on ported to the Wonderland Engine. While A-Frame is great, we wanted to test our internally developed WebXR Engine, which is optimized for the performance requirements of VR on the web and provides a development workflow that will enable bigger project scopes. With this game release we now have a proof of concept that our engine is suitable for great WebXR content and games.
Due to the early state of our engine, I faced a few bugs and obstacles to overcome, but Jonathan is pretty quick to fix bugs for the community and even did some optimization of the engine to handle Avoid the Dark’s use case even better. After all, I managed to learn working with the engine and now I am able to do fast prototyping with Wonderland Engine and make things work, even if they’re buggy in the beginning. The editor in Wonderland Engine is very neat to get things organized and developers, who know Unreal or Unity, will be pleased to find a similar editor structure like they’ve seen before in other engines. Besides that Avoid The Dark is a very simple game, I primarily used it as a learning experience to dive deeper into Wonderland Engine development. After understanding the basics, I really look forward to developing a more complex game with it. If I am able to advance as I did from Earth Defender to Iron || Rails, you could expect a cool new game in Wonderland Engine in the next few months.
